From Brooklyn to Broadway

My students need to attend a Broadway show for a unique and unprecedented experience of a lifetime!

My Students

For Halloween, our 4th graders put on a short skit from Peter Pan. After the skit, one of the students came to me and asked "What is a Broadway production?" "Why?" I asked. He said that one of the audience members told him our skit was like a Broadway production, and he had no idea what that meant.

Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area with a large population of students living in temporary housing (shelters).

Despite this, we are empowering students to use their voices to make changes. We create a culture in which students are often consulted and take a lead in shaping their own instructional experiences. We allow students to use their voices to develop as leaders and this is at the heart of students reaching their full potential. Having voices gives our students the skills necessary to become independent thinkers. It allows unique perspectives and give students an opportunity to take ownership of their own learning. Our scholars will learn how to have informed views on issues locally and globally. Through our weekly community circles, buddy reading and other activities, we are fostering a culture where learning happens through every experience and interaction.

My Project

My students need to attend a Broadway show for a unique and unprecedented experience of a lifetime! This experience will mean the world to our scholars. Many of our scholars have musical and artistic talent that they are not often able to utilize. Being able to attend a Broadway show will give the scholars an opportunity to see how these talents can be used for career-readiness. This will be the experience of a lifetime!

This donation will change the lives of our scholars.

They will be able to experience their hometown like they never could have imagined. As a veteran teacher, it has always been my dream to be able to share my love of theater with my scholars. I have worked in low-income neighborhoods for my entire career. This has made it very difficult to make this dream a reality. I know that once the scholars feel the excitement and energy of a Broadway show, they will be forever changed!
