From Bed-Stuy to Broadway!

My students need 15 tickets to the Broadway Showing of "The Lion King".

I am lucky enough to teach a group of second grade Gifted and Talented Students in a low-income urban area in New York. The school is in a high-need area and all of my students qualify for free and/or reduced lunches. Despite all of the challenges my students face on a daily basis, they are extremely bright, self-motivated and always eager to learn.

Recently my class finished an interdisciplinary unit of Fairy Tales and Folk Tales. My students wrote wonderful "Fractured Fairy Tales" and became experts on their favorite stories. They also put on small skits in the classroom and showed LOTS of enthusiasm for acting any chance they had. Their team work and dramatic skills were amazing! These little plays soon became the most popular activity in the classroom. I learned that despite living so close to famous theaters, my students have never seen a live performance of any kind.

My students would soak up and appreciate every little detail of a Broadway play! I would love to give them the chance to see the work of these gifted artists. I know that my gifted and talented students have the ability to become whatever they want to be in life and I want to expose them to as much as possible. Seeing a Broadway would be a dream come true!

Funding this project will plant a seed in the minds of these special youngsters. They are so gifted and can do so much, they only lack exposure to different experiences. Help bring their learning to life!
