From Basics to Books: Providing Essentials for Young Learners

Help me give my students essential items such as toothbrushes, wisps, toothpaste, Vaseline, makeup wipes, shower wipes, lip balm, lotion, deodorant, floss, brushes ,combs, hair ties, headbands, bobby pins, mouthwash, and books about want vs. need.

My Project

Our Care Closet will provide students with essential hygiene and personal care items for home and school, creating a supportive environment for their well-being as they develop reading and decision-making skills. This project will teach students the difference between "wants" and "needs" while building financial literacy. The Care Closet will operate on an honor system, encouraging students to take only what they need and empowering them to make mindful choices about limited resources.

Using Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts and A Chair for My Mother by Vera B Williams, students will explore real-life scenarios that illustrate the value of prioritizing needs over wants.

These engaging stories will help students make thoughtful decisions when accessing items from the Care Closet, reinforcing vocabulary and concepts related to financial literacy and essential resource management.

Aligned with Arkansas Standards in Economics, this project combines literacy with practical life skills, allowing students to make independent choices with an understanding of wants, needs, and resourcefulness. With your support, our students can access the essentials they need to feel confident and ready to learn, strengthening both their literacy and financial literacy skills for success in school and beyond.
