My students need a mobile light cart and light fixture, plus seeds, to start seeds indoors for our courtyard vegetable garden.

My Students

Believe it or not, it isn't always hot and humid in South Carolina! We are not able to grow vegetables outside all year long. The plant growing stand and light fixtures will help us start our seeds indoors while it is cooler so we can harvest our produce before the end of the school year.

I teach 120 sixth grade students at a public middle school.

Most of them have little understanding of where their food comes from or how plants grow. My class focuses on vegetable gardening but also includes nutrition and ecology. Our garden relies on environmentally friendly techniques and welcomes regular visits from local Master Gardeners. The students love the chance to get outside and play in the dirt and fight over the first strawberries. They take ownership of the produce and show pride in the garden.

My Project

To keep our costs down we start our plants from seed. We need a light stand to do this effectively. The PVC frame and six fluorescent bulbs we currently have do not provide enough light or space to start as many seeds as we need. It will also allow the students to see the plants in our classroom all day long throughout the year. Once the weather is warm enough to transplant our veggies outside we will use the stand for experiments with Wisconsin Fast Plants.

Seeing vegetables in the grocery store is completely different once you know the story behind how they got there.

This project will allow students to connect the germination of a seed to the finished produce. Students will taste the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor and hopefully gain a better appreciation for healthy foods.
