From Aquaculture to Academics: Growing as a New CTE Teacher

I need to improve my teaching skills with guides and curriculum for teaching math, job skills, and workplace literacy to CTE students.

My Project

As a new teacher on an alternative certification path, I’m passionate about bringing real-world experience into the classroom—especially in aquaculture and hands-on learning. But I’ve learned that teaching academic content like math, workplace documents, and job-readiness skills requires a very different approach. After seeing many of my students struggle with ACT WorkKeys topics, I realized I need help learning how to teach these foundational skills more effectively.

This project will provide me with professional development materials, teacher guides, and structured curricula focused on teaching fractions, decimals, measurements, and workplace reading and problem-solving.

These areas are key components of the ACT WorkKeys exam, a crucial certification for career and technical education students. I want to ensure that every student who walks into my classroom is equipped not just with technical knowledge, but also with the academic confidence and skills they need to succeed.

Your support will give me the tools to grow as an educator, learn how to teach challenging topics more clearly, and better serve my students as they prepare for career readiness exams and their futures beyond high school.
