This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is what we call in Chattanooga an "Opportunity Zone School". This means we are a school with the majority of students receiving free and reduced price lunch, as well as academically lower than other schools. When a school becomes and Opportunity Zone school, it means that the county has acknowledged your school as needing more support in order to help bring its grades and school culture up. Our students are beautiful and hard working like any other group, however, they often need the extra support to take them to the next level.
My Project
The majority of the supplies listed are hands-on math materials that will move my children's thinking to a deeper level. Instead of watching me work on the board with fractions and charts, they are going to be able to use their own hands to build with me. This is such a deeper level of learning for any child.
I am also asking for a subscription to Time magazine for kids, as I want my students to become more aware and prepared for the world.
By learning what is happening around them and being able to have meaningful conversations, this will help develop their vocabulary and overall communication skills.
