This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"A room without books is like a body without a soul," said Marcus T. Cicero. By the standards of this quote, our classroom is a soulless body. My students are learning a brand new language and we desperately need popular literature to help us reach the goal of language acquisition.
I teach some of the greatest students and people that I have ever met.
The students that walk through my door have overcome a lot to be successful - loss of family members and friends, working jobs to help their family pay the bills, and trying to balance school, work, family, and friends. We are in a school with a very high percentage of students on free or reduced lunch. These students do not have the money to go out and buy any book that would help them learn. They rely on the teachers to provide them with the opportunity to learn.
My Project
With the money from this project, we would be receiving such imaginative children's literature as "Horton Hears a Who", "The Cat and the Hat", and the Harry Potter series all in our target language of French. By having literature at our fingertips, we can spend class time forgetting about what is happening outside of our room and jump into books. Even though I teach high school French, these students are children at heart. By having French books in the classroom that they like, the students will be more involved in class and therefore, learning the language on a much deeper level. We can have literature circles and book talks all in French. We can discuss the poetry and be experienced to a whole different culture by having these books on hand. Also, by having students participate in active reading, their ability to read will increase and they will have more experience reading when it comes to the state mandated tests.
As a teacher, I dream of the day that I can look out at my class and see them actively engaged in a book or novel that is in French.
This project being funded would make that dream come true. I aim to create that same oasis feeling so many elementary classrooms have for their students. By having a room where they are having fun as they learn, the students will want to come to class, and when the students want to come to class, so much more is possible.
