My Students

Most of my students live in apartments and/or trailers and as such do not have the opportunity to experience first hand the joy of planting and growing their own plants. I have a courtyard outside my classroom which I am developing into a sustainable green space within the school.

I teach students from grades 2 through 6.

They are all in a pull out program for intellectually gifted program so are excited to learn and get involved in projects. I am taking them all through the Junior Master Gardener Program so that they can learn to appreciate and protect the environment. This new knowledge allows them to be checked out by other teachers as experts in the field! It is county school which is within the city limits. The school is the oldest consolidated school in the state and has recently celebrated its hundredth year.

My Project

These resources will allow the students to experience plant science as something real. The seeds and plants will enable them to realize that seeds are living things to be treated with respect and care. Gardening, using these resources will give them an opportunity to have an outdoor learning experience, fostering their excitement and love of learning.

Students who live in apartments and trailers tend to spend most of their recreational time in doors.

This is mirrored in the classroom. Growing and tending the garden will allow me to offer a different, hands on approach to science.
