This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Due to the lack of funding, I am not able to buy any new books for my 6th grade Language Arts classroom. We are trying to improve test scores and prepare for the new Common Core assessments, but we do not have the resources we need. Our students are wonderful and work extremely hard. They often comment on our lack of quality reading materials, and it is easy to see their disappointment. For many years, the students have had to share books with classmates, and it brings the students great joy to be able to be responsible for their own copy of the book we are reading in class.

We need to complete a class set of the books Flush and Frightful's Mountain.

Students will be able to take the books home and use them to prepare for the next day's lesson which is something they have never been able to do before!

My Project

My students need 35 copies of the book Flush and 37 copies of Frightful's Mountain. I only have enough of each book to give to half of the students, so this will give every student a book! The next two units in our Common Core aligned curriculum require the students to read the books Flush and Frightful's Mountain. The unit asks that the students each are given a copy of the novel to borrow in order for them to read at home and school.

I currently have 65 students, but have less then 30 copies of each book.

Therefore, I am asking for 35 copies of Flush and 37 copies of Frightful's Mountain to have complete sets of 65 of each book. The student's enjoy being responsible for their own copy of their books and being able to bring it home to read at their own pace. I would feel awful having to make the students share, and therefore having to leave the books at school.
