Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our second grade class and our fifth grade buddies will be reviving the Friendship Garden - Jardín de la Amistad. We will be the ongoing custodians of this interactive garden with sensory plants, stepping stones, and more for the school and surrounding neighborhood to enjoy.
We will be ambassadors for the environment by learning how to take care of and nurture the garden and teach others how important and special nature is.
Both classes will regularly tend to the garden keeping it healthy and beautiful. We plan on incorporating herbs for smelling and eating such as pineapple sage, mint, and lemon thyme. We will incorporate plants for touching such as lambs ear and of course, we will include flowering plants for our pollinators.
We need tools! We need trowels, gloves, and gardening tools so we can take care of our garden. Approximately 50-60 students will be caring for this garden each year. We need sturdy equipment to last so we are always ready to take care of the garden through all seasons.
Our students are urban kids who do not often get the chance to grow gardens. We hope through the mentorship of the big kids to our younger students they will develop a love for growing and the environment.
The goal is to incorporate the teaching and care for our garden throughout the school year across curricular areas. We want our school and neighborhood to enjoy interacting with nature and support students' education of the joy of growing and being responsible for a special outside.
