This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds, and therefore, they bring a uniqueness to my classroom and to the learning experience not only for themselves but also for me. My students are bused in from throughout the district to attend our magnet school which focuses on math, science, and career tech, so my classroom is extremely diverse in all areas of life. All students in my county receive free breakfast and lunch. One thing that brings them together is my classroom and the environment I create, and I want to foster an environment that loves reading.
Unfortunately, many students in today’s world have lost their love of reading.
However, I believe J.K. Rowling said it best when she stated, “If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book”.
First Chapter Fridays would allow me to show students that reading is an adventure. As the grandfather in The Princess Bride said to his grandson about reading, “Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles.” My hope is my students’ response will be like the grandson’s, “Doesn’t sound too bad. I’ll try to stay awake.” The variety of books like The Grave Yard Book, will hopefully encourage them to read more and put technology down. I do believe First Chapter Fridays will spark interest in reading independently, and this project will allow me to add books to my classroom library for my students to check out after hearing the first chapter.
