Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten students are emerging bilinguals as they are learning and speaking every day in both English and Spanish!

My kids have big hearts, curious minds, and enthusiasm for learning new things.

We are part of a small dual-language community where both students and staff value cultural and linguistic diversity. We face the challenges of poverty by leaning on and learning from each other. We are a team and a family in our classroom! Every day we are learning what it means to say, "I better my world, I better myself." Thank you for helping us to do both by contributing to our classroom community.

My Project

In Kindergarten, we work hard and play hard! Kindergarten is much more academically rigorous than I remember it being as a kid. My kids work so hard every day, but I am always actively trying to balance the rigor of academics with constructive and creative play.

I think it is so important to give students time to be creative, problem-solve, build social skills and play together.

Each Friday I give my students some time at the end of the day for free choice play, which we call Friday Fun! They absolutely LOVE this time! It is always interesting to see which activities students gravitate towards, how they problem-solve, and how they build social skills during this time.

This year, the most popular activities have been play dough, painting, and blocks. I know that students would be so excited to have new choices during this time! I have so many innovative builders who would do amazing things with the Magna-tiles, imaginative artists who would really appreciate new paints, and creative play dough molders who would be thrilled to have new tools to create with.
