Freshwater Tanks in the Classroom

Help me give my students healthy freshwater tanks for Biology Class. We test the water quality, we look at algae and other freshwater plants under the microscopes. These items will maintain our current tanks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Located in southern San Diego, ours is a tight-knit community with deep cultural ties to family. The students are 80% free or reduced price lunch and 70% English Language Learners. They come from very diverse backgrounds, and most don't go to a four-year university. Most students don't pursue the sciences as a field but only take the required Biology course for graduation. I try to inspire their desire for more biology during the one year I have them. The school is a Creative and Performing Arts School, it pulls students from all over the area who are creative thinkers and show talent in acting, drama, music, dance, and art. These students enrich our classrooms by sharing their talents through project-based learning. These diverse art students actually show great promise in the sciences to their own surprise. Their dedication to the arts and extracurricular activities teaches them perseverance, time management, and how to work hard to achieve a goal, but more importantly, they see that Biology and the study of life is in all the arts!

My Project

Students already have access to freshwater tanks in the classroom, but I can't keep up with the maintenance just on my own anymore. We need replacement filters and new plants for dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide. Some of my tanks need a gravel cleaner since they have been running for a few years now. Students love having access to algae for microscope work, students love just seeing the fish everyday. We also have ghost shrimp, a fiddler crab, and tons of baby fish. Students do water quality tests on the fish tanks and test the acidity of the water weekly.
