Freshwater Aquascape verse Saltwater Donor Reef

My students need tropical fish, ludwigia, azolla, and root plants to establish their own freshwater biosphere.

My Students

Ever want to show how life is connected to each other? All life forms have a niche or job to play in the ecosystem.

This program seeks to provide access to an accelerated degree format for students ages 17 - 20 to work toward a high school diploma.

Flexible time offerings allow students to choose the schedule which fits best for their schedule: mornings, afternoons, or evenings. Courses are offered in four hour blocks and each course session is three weeks in duration. Daily attendance is required, and attendance at any one of the available schedules is considered full-time enrollment. There are 15 course sessions in one year, including extended summer study.

My Project

With a freshwater aquarium tank the students will start a biosphere with animal and plant life. The tropical fish is a swordtail which will provide the plant organic food as bio-waste. The plants in the system will use the carbon dioxide from the fish to convert this into oxygen during photosynthesis. The students will learn various cycles of life such as the nitrogen cycle and a form of the water cycle. Since these fish thrive in an aquarium environment students can see various animal behaviors being displayed. The students also will compare the freshwater aquarium to the Donor's Reef saltwater reef tank that was started by Donor's Choose. A compare and contrast of these environments in a chemical data collection will also be done by the students during the year.

Last year I started to use Donor Choose for small student projects to expand learning in a more real life application.

Do to these projects 241 students gained credits which is 22% over the best year ever in our program. Through your gift the students with these activities make connections with real world applications. Some of these students then work on community projects as an extension to their learning. Changing students with low engagement to high with these mini activities.
