This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. My students love being in school, which is what made this past year of remote learning so hard.

As the pandemic wanes, we all look forward to the day we will be together again.

My students love being in school, and one of the reasons is how the classroom becomes a second home where they are loved, engaged in meaningful work, and feel important as they take on responsibilities.

My Project

Did you know that living plants can help filter out the air and help us breathe clean air? According to studies including those conducted by NASA, plants can help filter indoor pollutants! Our classroom used to be full of living plants to help provide cleaner air for my students. When the pandemic first hit, we were forced to leave the classroom with little notice and we were unable to return. Many of the plants went unwatered and died.

With students returning back to school this fall, it would be wonderful to bring back plants to our classroom!

Not only will they help clean the air of the room, but it will add a homey decor and cozy feel to the classroom environment. During holiday breaks, the students bring the plants home to take care of them. When they are in the classroom, the students take ownership and water and care for the plants. My students would love to return to a classroom full of plant life!
