Help me give my students an organized library using baskets to sort the leveled books by genre, as well as adding additional high interest titles for reading groups.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a self-contained class of 6th graders at an elementary school. The students come from a tight-knit community and our school is much loved by students and parents alike. More than 75% of my students are English Language Learners and about 90% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
These students have the biggest hearts and such a passion for learning.
They thrive with hands-on and experiential learning and overcome obstacles in their personal and academic lives every day. They are a group of strong and perseverant humans.
My Project
These baskets will help organize the classroom library books into genres so that students can better find a book that interests them. Each book will have a sticker indicating its level, as well as inside a genre coded basket. Some genres will be action, adventure, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, as well as topics and themes such as school life, overcoming challenges, sports, animals, friendship, multicultural baskets as well.
Additionally, there are some high-interest titles here as well to help engage students in reading and captivate their attention and curiosity.
Some examples are "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" and "Witches."
