Fresh Kindergarten Learners Need Refreshing Phonics Support
My students need literacy-based small group enrichment activities, such as phonics games, magnet letters, and early reading games for their new classroom!
My classroom is filled with nineteen smiling kindergarten faces! All of these children are eager to learn, but since their classroom was most recently the school's furniture-storage room, the shelves are nearly bare. These students deserve a literacy-rich environment from which to explore and learn!
What a cheerful, eager-to-learn bunch of kindergarten students!
Half of my students come from homes of poverty and qualify for free lunch. Twenty-five percent speak a language other than English at home. They came to school in September and were ready to start their literate lives, fell in love with a kindergarten teacher, and then were presented with over-crowded classrooms and the prospect of having to move to another classroom. Two weeks into the school year, I opened the new classroom with only desks and paper. What was once a storage space, now houses these happy students. We are working to do our best with just our common school supplies, and the students continue to work toward their reading goals. But it would be so much better to be able to provide them with enriching, literacy-based games, activities, supplies, and experiences to support them in these goals.
My Project
Each day, I envision a classroom alive with the "buzz" of learners who eagerly work alongside one another over an alphabet puzzle, letter sorting, or writing support activity with their teacher. We have five tables in our classroom, and to be able to have enough materials to host an appealing, academically interesting activity at each one for my students, is a vision that I would like to see achieved. Kindergarten is the year when our young students' eyes are opened to the world of letters, letter-sounds, words, and finally reading. What a gift it would be to be able to have materials for them each day that engage their young, hopeful minds into a reading or writing task. These materials will be a great start to building the kind of enrichment in a kindergarten classroom that these students deserve.
Donations to this project will be donations straight into the lives of five year old children and the beginning of one of the most important skills in their lives: reading!
Being a child in a classroom that offers interesting and memorable reading activities, is a child that is guaranteed to start a love of reading that will hopefully last throughout their school careers and into their lives. This is important. Thank you for considering the project!
