My Students

My students are readers! We have a special spot in our room for student-recommended reading. Students display books and create image-rich, vivid book reviews to suggest great books to others. Thanks to DonorsChoose, we have an HP printer in our classroom, but---yikes!---we are almost out of ink!

My urban middle school students, many of them English Language Learners, begin the year reading years below grade level.

We work hard in our mixed-grade Language Arts classroom, reading and writing every day, in order to strengthen academic skills to prepare for high school success. Over the years, we have built an appealing classroom library around student interests. Daily self-selected reading is a cornerstone of our classroom. Students develop new interests through reading. It is important for each student to discover an author, genre, or topic which sparks a passion for reading and learning. My students know that one great book can turn anyone into an avid reader!

My Project

My students have carefully decorated two shelves in our classroom to display student-recommended reading. Wonderful books are displayed on these shelves, next to a binder of student-created book reviews. These reviews are a charming mix of words and images. We need an HP color toner refill to make sure students can continue to create colorful book responses. My students carefully illustrate their reviews with scenes and symbols important to each book. Without color, the impact is just not the same. Our HP printer and color printing is critical to publishing an appealing product that keeps kids reading and writing!

Illustrated book reviews keep all my students, including visual learners, engaged in reading and writing.

Middle school kids enjoy creating appealing book reviews with colorful graphics; they like sharing the final product with their peers. Please help us continue this important classroom project!
