My Project

About My Students

My students are curious, dynamic middle schoolers who thrive when given access to stories that challenge them and reflect real-world choices.

They come to class eager to participate, discuss big ideas, and grow as readers. However, engaging teenagers with reading requires physical books that are accessible, intact, and ready to use every day.

My Project

This project will fund full class sets of Lois Lowry’s The Giver and S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. Currently, our school district no longer purchases class sets of print novels. Our existing copies are severely worn, falling apart, and constantly shared across multiple grade-level teachers, making it difficult to align unit plans or allow students to take books home for independent reading.

Having dedicated, durable copies for our classroom will transform our English Language Arts units:

Building Critical Thinking: The Giver serves as our gateway into dystopian literature, sparking high-interest debates on ethics, conformity, and individuality.

Fostering Empathy & Connections: The Outsiders resonates deeply with young teens navigating peer relationships, identity, and social structures.

Supporting Equity: Fresh copies ensure every student—regardless of home resources—has reliable, equal access to the text during class instruction and homework assignments.
