My Students
I teach in a title 1 school where 100% of the students are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free lunch. The students are being raised in single parent homes, by their guradians, some are even homeless. Most are faced with different barriers/challenges, however they all aspire to learn. Most students are given the responsibility of looking after their younger siblings. Many students lack social skills and simple necessities that we often take for granted like basic hygeine products:
Help me give my students soap, toothpaste, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and other basic life essentials needed for personal hygiene. Students will be allowed to take these products for use at home as well as school. Obtaining good hygiene and being well groomed is imperative for students to build confidence and social growth. Many of my students don’t have access to these products at home. As an educator, I do my best to provide these products for my students at school by using my own money to purchase products however, the numbers are overwhelming. I am a firm believer that I can’t change what happens at home however when you enter my class I can do my best to ensure a positive, safe, environment that is conducive to learning. My students know that the supplies ( hygiene items) are located in the bottom drawer on my file cabinet. However, by helping provide the needs within this projects not some but all students will benefit and become better prepared. Also, by providing these items, students will be able to concentrate on academic skills being taught instead of worrying about personal hygiene.
