They can explore concepts at their own pace, collaborate with classmates, and receive instant feedback that helps them grow with confidence. They could not believe that individuals they have never met cared enough to invest in their learning. Immediately, students began using the headsets during small-group reading, online math programs, and independent assignments. The noise reduction has helped even my most easily distracted learners stay focused longer and complete their work with confidence.\r\nSeveral students who often struggled to follow audio directions are now participating more independently because they can clearly hear every instruction. The mobile standing desk has become a shared tool for both my students and myself. Some students choose to stand and work during independent practice, and I also use it to model during writing or when teaching math problems while moving around the room to better support learners. The mobile whiteboard now lives at our small-group table and is used every day for targeted instruction; I can quickly model strategies, break down problems step-by-step, and adjust lessons in real time based on what each group needs. The closet organizers keep our supplies neat and easy to find, which means students can take ownership of grabbing what they need without losing valuable learning time.\r\n\r\nThe first day everything was set up, the classroom was filled with excited reactions asking, \"Is that for us?\" and \"Can I try the standing desk today?\" My calming corner, now equipped with floor seats, quickly became a favorite spot. During center time, students are free to choose where they'll work best. Some chose to curl up on the floor seats to read or complete independent tasks, while others rotate to the standing desk or traditional seats. One student who often feels restless during work time told me, \"I like sitting on the floor over here because it helps me calm down and finish my work.\" Moments like that reminded me that these resources are meeting both academic and emotional needs.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, we're able to take our current lessons a step deeper.\r\nAs we continue working on our ongoing lessons and activities, my students will rotate through small-group lessons at the mobile whiteboard, where I can tailor instruction to their specific needs, and then move into independent centers where they choose the seating that helps them focus best. Our next steps include having students use the different areas of the room to complete and share their work such as presenting from the standing desk, practicing skills in small groups, and reflecting quietly in the calming corner when needed. This structured environment will encourage responsibility, independence, and focus, which are essential skills for lifelong learning.\r\n\r\nThe Long-Term Impact\r\nThe ultimate goal of this project is to create a classroom where students feel confident, capable, and calm. By reducing clutter and confusion, students can fully immerse themselves in learning, complete tasks efficiently, and build habits that will benefit them throughout their academic journey. It's no longer just a room—it's a space where they feel safe, in control, and valued. And believe it or not, it's often through something as simple as a board game, a bean bag chair, or a puzzle that real change happens.\r\n\r\nOur Playsafe Room was created with a clear purpose: to give students a calm, structured space where they could take a break when emotions get too big or when they need to reset. It's not a reward, and it's definitely not a punishment. It's a supportive space that teaches emotional regulation, self-awareness, and positive social interaction in a gentle, hands-on way.\r\n\r\nWe've filled the room with things that are comforting and engaging—bean bags for relaxing, board games for connection, puzzle games and brain teasers to help refocus the mind, and other quiet activities that gently guide students back to a place of calm. What's amazing is how well these simple tools work. I've seen students walk in with tears in their eyes or frustration in their voice, sit down with a puzzle or a calming game, and within a few minutes, they're talking, smiling, or even helping a classmate.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was seeing two students, who often struggle with conflict, work together on a puzzle. Without even realizing it, they were building patience, communication, and trust—all while sitting side by side on a bean bag. Another student who has a hard time sitting still in class found comfort in playing a quiet game of Connect 4 in the Playsafe Room. He came back to class more focused and was able to finish his work with confidence.\r\n\r\nThese activities might seem simple, but for our students, they mean a lot. Board games build social skills. Puzzle games refocus and soothe the brain. Bean bags offer comfort and help the body relax. Together, these tools help our students learn how to pause, breathe, and find their center.\r\n\r\nWhat's more powerful is that my students are starting to recognize when they need a break—and they ask for it in a respectful way. They no longer wait until they're overwhelmed. That kind of self-awareness and self-advocacy is something many adults are still learning. And now, it's part of our classroom culture.\r\n\r\nThe Playsafe Room has reduced classroom disruptions, improved focus, and built stronger emotional bonds among students. It's also created a bridge between academics and social-emotional learning—because when students feel safe and regulated, they're more open to learning.\r\n\r\nTo me, the Playsafe Room isn't just a space with bean bags and board games—it's a space where kids are reminded they are more than their behavior. They're learners, thinkers, feelers—and they deserve support. This room says to every child, \"It's okay to feel what you're feeling. And we're here to help you through it.\"\r\n\r\nThat's the kind of classroom environment I've always dreamed of—and now, we're living it.","fullyFundedDate":1739218259953,"projectUrl":"project/the-playspace-room/9079104/","projectTitle":"The PlaySpace Room","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Aporto","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9376595_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1700551133506","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9376595"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_46676","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":354,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":86,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.3,"schoolId":46676,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Eccleston Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Eccleston Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/orange-county-public-schools/eccleston-elementary-school/46676"}
