This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a counselor in a low-income, high-poverty school district, and my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of the students at our school have experienced trauma in their lives, have academic and behavioral challenges at school, and receive a free or reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."

When basic needs are not met, the children we work with cannot be present and learn how to be good students.

The counseling office provides an ear to listen, cozy chairs to relax in, and often snacks and friends!

We may not be able to control their home lives. However, we can certainly impact their experience during the school day.

My Project

Our school will be returning to full in person in the fall with more than 800 students. Many of the students have been home since March of 2020 due to the pandemic and this will be their first time on site since.

Little brains have so much to worry about, and their safety in the counseling office should not be another thing to worry about!

Knowing that they have clean air, provided by the air purifier, will help them to know that school is a safe and fun place again as they adjust to our new normal.
