Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of a Spanish Dual Language Immersion program where they learn in Spanish for half of their academic day and in English the second half. They learn Math and Social Studies in Spanish and they receive at least 45 minutes of Spanish literacy a day. I teach 1st grade for one half of the day and I teach 2nd grade for the other half, tasking me with 51 students to teach in Spanish!
This is my first year as a teacher and I am already so passionate about giving my students an enriching Spanish immersion experience!
My students are so eager to learn and speak in the targeted language, I would love to take their learning further.
My Project
I would love to get a carpet large enough for my students to gather on during class. With the amount of structure and support I give students for their Spanish acquisition, it is important that my students have a large enough gathering space where they can engage with me and each other. This carpet, in particular, will make it easy for me to pair up students when we have "think-pair-shares" and "peer teaching" moments. It is hard to believe that 30 spots aren't enough when I have both of my classes together but I wouldn't dream of anything different! I love giving my students the opportunity to collaborate with one another and enrich each other's learning; including their own.
