French Students to Visit Québec

My Students

My students travel the world--in their minds. I want their dreams to become a reality.

My students are sons and daughters of factory line workers and college professors, business owners and truck drivers.

They are curious about the world, and some have seen some of it, but some of them have never left the state, much less the country. They come from a small town in a rural county. Their school has approved their trip, although with its limited budget, the district cannot help fund this adventure.

My Project

My students will go to Canada in February. This is bravery. They will order poutine in the language of Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain. They will go dog-sledding and inner-tubing, adapting the cultural pride of making the best of a cold climate. My students will explore the Old Towns of Montréal and Québec City. They will visit the battlefield and meet the players in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham.

Perhaps most importantly, my students will experience first-hand that French is a language and a culture that is within striking distance of their own homes--that "foreign" language and culture is not really that foreign.

In our global society, my students will be that much closer to understanding the importance of cultural tolerance and linguistic diversity.
