Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our students are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders from diverse backgrounds. More than half of our students are low-income children. They are able to experience a unique Montessori and French education that is unavailable at other public schools in the city.

Our students are loving, curious kids, who are eager to learn and experience new things.

Our goal is to eventually be a fully bilingual French school. Since many of our students are starting with the language as 2nd graders, they have some catching up to do. My students and I would be so grateful to receive these resources that will facilitate French instruction, as well as make the area where they learn French warmer and more inviting.

My Project

Students that learn to read in a second language have been shown to have increased language arts skills in their first language. This is just one of the many benefits of early world language instruction and co-literacy. I teach French language arts to each group of my groups for 30 minutes a day. This set of readers, with online audio, would increase the quantity and quality of the French reading my students do when they work independently in their homeroom classrooms. The audio is especially exciting. It will help my students to continue to develop both their French silent letter recognition skills and their native listening skills with native accents.

Having these materials available will support my students' ever growing literacy skills in English and French.
