This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
With shortened attention spans and competition from cell phones, tablets, and video games, fun activities in the classroom entice students to use their language skills and demonstrate their cultural understanding. Some of the tools I'm requesting allow my K-8 students to review general vocabulary we've learned in an interactive, interpersonal way. With the Bananagrams, students use letter tiles to create words in a crossword fashion (similar to Scrabble) to review and expand their vocabulary. Some of the other tools are directly related to a unit my 3rd and 4th graders study on games and activities French students play at recess and in their leisure time. My students will play these games and compare and contrast those games with the ones they play at school and at home.
Gamification (using games) in education has been shown to increase motivation and engagement in students.
My students really enjoy the French classroom because it's an opportunity for them to express their own preferences and speak to their classmates using the French language. They also learn about other countries and cultures. It's really a break in the routine of their day. Giving students time and resources to use what they've learned in a fun way encourages them to pay attention, participate and learn. These are the types of experiences that the students remember, and motivate them to learn more.
