My students are highly active and hands-on learners. They enjoy moving and are used to flexible seating in their classroom. However, when they come to Music, all they have are chairs that are old and uncomfortable. The floor is hard, cold tile and the small carpet is used for instruments.
Music should be the most freeing of all subjects and my students need an atmosphere that is conducive to experiencing music as well as learning.
Because of the military bases nearby, the student body at my school is diverse and transient. We have the opportunity to explore many different cultures through music and dance and the extra space and flexibility would be wonderful.
Music class should not be a place where children just sit and are taught to listen. It is meant to be a place where they can experience all aspects of the subject and be allowed freedom to express and create.
With this project, I will be able to provide room to move with, create, and experience music on a whole new level for all 400 plus children that enter my room!
This generation of students are highly stimulated and require a much different teaching approach than even ten years ago. I feel that this open and flexible arrangement will provide freedom and foster excitement for creative minds.
