Ms. Grimble from Kailua HI is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need copies of Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings for our unit on Freedom & Equality.

My students come from various backgrounds but once in the classroom, they become unified into our classroom community. Because of our unique community we have the ability to learn about the world through the unique backgrounds of our students.
In addition to a rich cultural background, my students also have various talents in and out of the classroom including music, art, athletics, and much more.
Some of my students have started their own bands and give amazing performances. Others create and sell art at local coffee shops. We bring our individual talents and backgrounds to the classroom to further our understanding of literature.
Most importantly, my students are resilient, using their past experiences to make them stronger and taking advantage of the resources our school offers them.
Aloha,
My Junior English Students, approximately 75, will be reading Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings as part of our unit "Freedom & Equality versus Imprisonment & Inequality”.
Our school is a Title I school and after funding is dispersed amongst the various departments, there are some expenses left over. One of those expenses is money to purchase copies of Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Since we cannot put the responsibility of purchasing books on our students and their families, teachers are left to figure out ways to provide students with the novels. I'm in the process of finding used copies at the library bookstores and finding access to online copies.
