My students need materials for "Free Write Fridays" including dictionaries, thesauri, prompt cards, colorful pens, and storage to house their new supplies.
In the words of Anne Frank, "I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn." I yearn for my students to feel these same desires- freedom, courage, and empowerment- as they write.
My 5th grade students have a passion for writing and I have a desire to keep that passion strong.
In order to do this, my students have "Free Write Fridays" in which they take a mental break from the structured writing curriculum we do Monday-Thursday and they get to choose their own topic (or choose from provided topic ideas) to write on. This allows my students to express their own creativity, opinions, and ideas. Students turn in their Writing Journals (composition notebooks) to me where I then review their free writing and make comments or connections to their stories, poems, and songs they write. My school has recently mandated a one-hour writing block and "Free Write Fridays" allow students to write for an uninterrupted 30-45 and allows a 15-20 minute share time at the end of the hour. The students enjoy using the microphone in the classroom to share their writing masterpieces. In a world that is inundated with technology, students need to embrace true writing even more.
My Project
I am requesting several items for my students. First, dictionaries and thesauri will assist my students in spelling correctly and using descriptive language to enrich their writing. Next, students will use prompt and story cards to choose ideas to write about. Often times, students will run dry on ideas to write about and these cards will allow students to choose from a plethora of ideas that they never have even considered. These cards will also strengthen each type of writing the students do- narrative, expository, and persuasive. Also, I am requesting colored ink pens so the students can have fun while writing. Writing with pencils gets pretty boring after awhile and writing with pens, not to mention colorful ones, is much smoother and easier. Students can also choose to color-code the genres of writing. Writing with pens keep their creativity alive. Last, a storage shelf and baskets will help us to keep all of these new supplies neat and clean.
Donations to fund this "Free Write Friday" project would be greatly appreciated and will make a difference in each student's writing.
Writing is a skill that will always remain alive whether it be in writing letters, thank you notes, stories, poems, and much more. I hope to continue to keep the passion of writing alive in my student's hearts and encourage them to continue writing long after they have left my classroom.
