I am the intervention specialist in a second grade, full inclusion classroom. Not only do I co-teach in the classroom, I also manage the IEPs and goals of the nine students with disabilities. In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students. More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. Even with these barriers, this does not stop my amazing students from coming to school eager and anxious to learn and be the best they can be!
My students' disabilities range from mild to intensive, so I strive to make sure all of my students learn, no matter their ability levels, in this setting.
There is a lot of differentiated teaching and learning going on throughout the day to make sure I am meeting the needs of all of the students. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn. My goal is to set them up to be independent, contributing members to society in the future!
My Project
Gone are the days where teachers sit at their desks and teach to the whole class! This holds especially true for our students in our full inclusion classroom. We currently have a document camera that projects anything we do at our desk on to the whiteboard. This has been wonderful for our students - especially students with disabilities. They are able to follow along with our instruction and copy using the model from the board. The only problem is, we are tied to our desks with only having the one document camera.
With the MimioPad wireless pen tablet, we could move freely around the classroom while controlling lessons on the smartboard and share control with students for collaborative learning!
The MimioPads would allow us to walk around the room and interact with the lesson on the board. We can then help individual students as we circulate the room and manage the classroom more effectively. Our students could work simultaneously on iPads using the MimioStudio app and all work could be shared at the front of the room. Embedding STEM and inquiry based learning in our curriculum has been our school's professional learning focus this school year. Our students could use the MimioPads to showcase their innovative ideas on the interactive whiteboard. These devices would make such a difference in our full inclusion classroom by giving all students access to interactive lessons and one-on-one assistance throughout the day!
