Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade teacher currently working in the South Bronx. Currently, the school is a school in need of improvement because of low reading and math scores. The school, which is located near a busy highway, has a high percentage of students with asthma. In order to provide an environment conducive to learning I would like to have a small but strong air conditioner.
Last year, during the NYC ELA, my classroom was stifling hot. Although my students tried their best, it was very uncomfortable making it difficult to concentrate. I had one student who had a nose bleed due to the heat and lost valuable test time. Since the city has made 5th grade the target grade this year, I do not want to the students to be in an uncomfortable situation which they cannot control. I have made previous request to my administration, but due to budget constraints I was turned down.
Currently, I have about 10 students with a history of asthma in my class. It would be of great benefit to have a source of cool air without having to open the windows, which collect soot from the highway.
