Our students come from a low-income neighborhood where 100 percent of the students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Many of the students come into kindergarten unable to recognize letters or read and often do not have the resources to be able to read at home in order to better their reading abilities.
Even though my students have many factors working against them, they are enthusiastic learners that deserve to be provided with resources to help them succeed!
We are committed as a community to work together to provide the best learning environment for our students. Through high expectation and a strong family connection, we help our students achieve academics and emotional success. My students are hard workers and truly want to be in school.
My students represent the diversity, vision, heart and soul of our vibrant and culturally diverse city. Our school is TK through second grade dual-immersion public charter school committed to shaping bilingual, bi-literate leaders of tomorrow. Our students challenge themselves academically and develop their character to transform their community and world.
These books will support my students in understanding that there are many ways to be a kid!
Students need to see themselves reflected in the text they read but they should also be exposed to other cultures and ideas to build their worldly understanding. Providing a print rich environment that represents all kinds of kids will help create empathy and understanding. We have a diverse community and books are one way to make our classrooms and library more inclusive spaces for everyone.
