Help me give my students journals and books to use on a journey to self and social discovery w/books that will inspire kids to fall in love with reading, writing, and advocating for themselves and for social justice issues.

My Project
What makes my students extra special is their Aloha and love for one another. The island ways have instilled amazing character traits in our kids.
My goals for this project are to use the books, that have incredible stories of overcoming racial violence, gang violence, domestic violence, and poverty, to inspire them to stand up for themselves and for others.
I plan to have my kids read different survival stories from the books, and in groups they’ll discuss the struggles and coping strategies. Part of the plan is to have them write in their journals, just like the freedom writers did, and from the perspective of the protagonist in literacy circles.
My goal is for kids to know how to fight for themselves and others, for them to acquire skills needed for navigating life, and for them to be able to advocate for those whose voices have fallen prey to “the system”
We will engage in deep discussion, chunk the stories in the book, then have a presentation that presents certain struggles in the book and how the characters overcame them. Then we will practice applying the strategies from the lens of the protagonist in reading groups.
This project will make a difference in their learning by teaching them to think critically, by encouraging them to recognize others and their circumstances, and then to advocate for change and for solutions to real-work social justice issues.
