My students need colored pencils, construction paper and other fantastic art supplies because art is a postive way to express who they are and show what they can do!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever struggled in math, reading or writing? Well art is the one thing many of my students are able to feel successful with and it helps them to express themselves. It is an outlet that allows many of them to show their talents and feel great about who they are because what they create is beautiful.
I have ESL and IEP students in my second grade class in NY that struggle in many of the subject areas such as math, literacy, and writing.
They try so hard to be successful and complete each task even though they have many challenges. I have noticed that many of them are very talented and creative in art. Just to see the cover on their nonfiction book stand out and shine even when their writing doesn't makes me feel happy and proud of them because that cover made them feel happy and proud of themselves!
My Project
Having art supplies like colored pencils and construction paper would give them hope and build their self esteem as they create beautiful art work and show off their talents. My hope is that they will believe in themselves enough to continue to work hard. They should feel good about the work they are capable of doing because they are trying their best. I want them to believe in themselves just as much as I do. We do enormous amounts of reading and writing where students have opportunities to illustrate their books to publish. Sometimes we have to leave it as a pencil drawing because we don't have art supplies to color their illustrations. I know having these art supplies would change their lives.
Sometimes school is the only place students have to be themselves, to be free to express their feelings through art.
Having these art supplies in my classroom available to my students could open doors for their future and you could be the reason for making it happen!
