About My Students

I am blessed to work with the most talented, diverse group of students. I am sure most teachers say this about their kids, but the seniors in my AP English Literature and Composition really are THAT AMAZING!

Not long ago, Crystal, a talented writer and gifted orator, presented me with an idea, as she tugged her thick black hair from under her emerald green pea coat. She had thought it over and decided that Frankenstein and Wicked could be parallel texts. I listened as she attempted to convince me that since we had just finished reading Shelley's Gothic novel, a class trip was certainly in order to watch a Broadway musical with similar themes, as a whole class. She was right. Heading to the famous Gershwin Theater would be the perfect culmination to our unit. Crystal soon recruited Magaly, her classmate, to drive the point. My students deserve this. Please help us make this proposal a reality!

Given the fact that our school is so small, our students are very closely knit with one another, and the staff. We work hard to support our students academically and emotionally, kind of like an extended family would do for one another. Through this project I would like to help my students to further develop their social skills of empathy and foster in them a love for the theater. I would like for them to see the close connection between different art forms such as literature and performing arts. Living in NYC is exciting. Watching this musical will further instill in the a sense of pride and love for the city we all call our home.

In Their Own Words

Going to a business focused public school, my classmates and I do not get much exposure to the arts, due to low funding. I am trying to show my classmates that art is found all around us, not only in books. The archetypes which we have studied, along with the rhetoric methods, are reoccurring in all forms of entertainment.

With my teacher's help, I will become a stronger leader by learning how to take initiative and execute my ideas, no matter how impossible they might seem. At first, I did not want to mention going on this trip, since I saw no chance of attending. However, I noticed that my teacher was able to do the impossible of supplying us with resources which seemed unheard of. After making this project a reality, I feel confident within myself to achieve anything that I set my mind to.

Very often, literature is distorted through the lens of movies. For instance, many of my classmates began this unit with the notion that the creature was named "Frankenstein", such as in the famous film. However, there are various forms of art that do fulfill the common archetypes and themes which we have learned in AP Literature. In addition, although most of us were born and raised in NYC, we have not had the funds nor opportunity to attend a Broadway show.
