My Project

My students live in a book desert, where many of them don't have access to books outside of school. As the school librarian, I continuously look for new and creative ways to incorporate reading skills into their lives. Interest in graphic novels is high and this upcoming school year I want to give my students the materials they need to create their own graphic novels and comics. The goal is to inspire literacy, creativity, and self-expression by combining reading, writing, and art in an engaging format.

Graphic novels have become a powerful tool in elementary literacy, especially for reluctant readers and students who benefit from visual storytelling.

Many of our students are drawn to this format but don’t always have the resources or confidence to create their own. By providing dedicated materials, such as blank comic book templates, tracing paper and light boards, artist pencils, colored pencils, and markers, students will truly feel like artists. This, coupled with guidance in a welcoming media center environment, we can foster creativity while improving writing fluency, sequencing skills, and comprehension. These materials will also support storytelling units, literature response projects, and student-led book creation.
