My Students

Today's English teacher faces many challenges, one of which is getting kids to like and relate to literature. While teachers can see the value in reading works like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, students don't see as many connections. So what do we do now? How do we engage them?

For the most part, my students understand the value of a high school education if for no other reason than as a necessary stepping stone to get to college.

Sadly, many of them are simply going through the motions. They don't get as much out of their high school curriculum because they don't see the purpose or the benefit. I dream of a classroom where we are reading literature and having a lively discussion because they see the relevance. Yes, I have those moments with my students now, but not as often as I would like. My students are the ones who tell me it is because the novels we read aren't interesting or have nothing to do with their lives. I don't agree with them, but trying to convince them is an unnecessary, uphill battle.

My Project

Bringing in a new piece of literature with themes that relate to issues today will help inspire my students to see other connections in literature. Slaughterhouse Five wouldn't be considered contemporary, but Kurt Vonnegut's unique approach to timeless issues make the novel new to the students. I can just imagine how excited my students will be to have a novel with a quirky main character, time travel, and themes that relate to their own lives.

Your donation will provide my students with an opportunity to read something different and will expand this teacher's repertoire.

My goal as a teacher is to impart knowledge of literature and socially relevant themes and, above all, challenge my kids to think critically. Please join me in this endeavor!
