My Students
I teach in a small, rural, agricultural community. Most of my students don't travel often outside of a 50-mile radius of our community; therefore, they don't have a lot of experiences outside of school. Our school is a Title I school with approximately 75% of our student body receiving free or reduced-price meals. Our student body consists of about 45% Hispanic, 40% Caucasian, and 10% African American. Most ELL students only speak Spanish at home since their parents speak only Spanish.
My Project
In my opinion, fractions are one of the most difficult concepts in the third grade curriculum, and students need a strong understanding of the concepts to succeed in higher grades. With these materials, my students develop an understanding of fractions with fun, hands on learning. The fraction circles and bars give my students the hands on opportunities to build their understanding. Making fractions relative and useful is the key to building a strong foundation.
Through the selected books, I will incorporate math and literature and show students how fractions are apart of everyday life.
By giving my students the real world connections and strong knowledge base, they will be prepared to dig deeper into more challenging fractions concepts such as equivalent fractions and simplifing fractions.
