This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I am a new fourth grade teacher at a high-risk school in North Carolina. Last year I taught first grade and got the shock of my life when my principal announced that she was moving me to fourth grade for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year. With a new grade level comes a new curriculum and new materials that I am in desperate need for. Fractions, decimals, and percents are three concepts that are heavily focused on and without proper materials it makes learning these concepts more difficult for my eager students. Therefore, I am asking for a variety of learning materials that my students will be able to use all year to develop and enhance their understanding of abstract ideas. Using the fraction circles the students will be able to build using different sized pieces to grasp the "how many makes a whole" idea. With the assistance of the decimal boards, the students will be able to build their own decimals, and practice identifying and reading the number. The overhead kit will be utilized by the teacher to lead the students in whole group instruction, manipulating pieces on the overhead while the students are able to manipulate materials at their desks. I am hopeful that not only my students this year, but also classes in the future will be able to have appropriate math manipulatives to assist them. With your help, this can be possible for children who are desperately in need of your kindness and generosity. I thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
