My students need area tiles, fraction multipliers, and a math folder game library to have hands-on materials to gain a better understanding of fractions and geometry.
Do you remember the challenge of learning to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions? If you are like many of us, math was great until fractions came along! Fractions are still a challenge. Students are now expected to explain and justify how they solve a problem and defend their answers.
I have eager, willing students who are in a high poverty area.
Many students do not have a huge amount of support at home, and their families cannot afford to donate money or items for classroom activities. This is a Title I school, and many of my students are learning English as a second language.
My Project
My students need area tiles, fraction multipliers, and a math folder game library to have hands-on materials to gain a better understanding of fractions and geometry.
One of the lessons I need to teach requires students to divide fractions, but without using the invert and multiply method I learned in 5th grade. The clear plastic overlays (fraction multipliers) allow students to visualize this lesson. I am planning to use the area tiles for both geometry and fraction lessons. Putting an object in student hands and letting them use that to support their math learning is invaluable. The geometry and measurement folder games will support direct instruction as well as allow for extra practice for some students and extension activities for others.
This donation allows me to have materials in my classroom that I would either do without or try to make or purchase on my own.
Students come alive when they have the opportunity to do something in math that is different. These materials will provide a meaningful addition to my instruction.
