Help me give my students to understand fractions! My students will never look at a Hershey Chocolate Bar or a KitKat bar as just a piece of candy. Instead, they will see fractions and equivalent fractions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I have the privilege to teach an amazing group of 4th graders with an awesome group of educators. In Fourth Grade, students spend the year learning about fractions, wrestling with the concept of multi-digit multiplication, honing their reading skills, and learning science and social studies concepts.
My school is full of diverse students who are eager to not only learn but to experience the beautiful world around them.
They enjoy hands-on science experiments and demonstrations, and they live for spending time together.
My Project
My students will be using the food items in class to decompose and compose fractions. This will help them to understand why mathematicians use multiplication and division to prove decomposition and composition of fractions. Using real world examples will make these abstract concepts both relatable and memorable. Students will use the play-dough to create individual area models and tape diagrams to represent the real world examples that they made with the food items. The dry erase markers will be used to write the appropriate mathematical proof under each model. Since each student has access to an iPad, they will then create an iMovie to document their progress. These will be shared with parents during parent teacher conferences.
