My Students

I absolutely LOVE math and LOVE teaching math and my enthusiasm is rubbing off on my students. However, some of them get frustrated because they haven't gotten a concrete sense of fractions and are unable to move to the abstract level. Using the manipulatives will help them succeed.

Some of my students come from all over the world, and are just learning English.

Many of them know basic math, but have trouble with fractions. Unfortunately, we are in a very large Pennsylvania public school system, that is currently experiencing a fiscal crisis. We won't get enough supportive services, and definitely don't have ample supplies for the students. Two thirds of my students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch, which means they are living at or below the poverty level and without your help, might not be able to afford this educational, motivational tool.

My Project

Manipulatives provide opportunities for students to move the parts in relation to the whole or to move the whole in relation to the parts. Using number lines and their linear feature of an area model are effective strategies for locating fractions on a number line, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions.

Many teachers tend to prematurely teach fractions only using algorithms.

This way can be unsuccessful with many students. Students need a strong concrete background before moving to use only algorithms, which are abstract. My students will become more fluent in fractions and the numbers (fractions) will become more meaningful.
