When students have access the internet, their ability to grow as researchers expands exponentially. However, creating true 21st century learners requires the appropriate technology, which my school severely lacks.
I hope that having an additional 5 computers in my class will help bridge the gap.
Every day I have the privilege of spending 7 hours with an energetic bunch of 9 and 10 year olds who love to learn and explore.
Our school is a public charter school dedicated to fostering a love of the arts in our students. Students pay nothing to attend school here, and receive lessons in dance and music, and many visual arts disciplines, in addition to all state-mandated curriculum. Parents are required to spend 30 hours per year serving the school, which helps to create a real family-friendly learning environment. Our students also each do 15 hours of community service per year, teaching them the importance of helping others.
My Project
Having these chromebooks at their fingertips will allow my students immediate access to the wealth of knowledge the internet provides. Our school already has licenses to many learning websites and programs, such as World Book encyclopedia, Learn360, and Accelerated Reader. But since our school has only a few working computers, and those are isolated in the school library (which is open only half the week), taking advantage of those programs is difficult.
Additionally, the Google chromebook is a unique tool, and it interfaces directly with Google's wealth of internet based programs and apps.
Having these chromebooks in our classroom will allow my students direct access to web-based learning, and enable them to keep up with the rapidly-advancing world around them. Additionally, with the use of Google Docs, my students will be able to collaborate on assignments and share their progress with me directly.
In its mission statement, my school district said they are dedicated to creating 21st century learners...students who will grow into adults who can successfully meet the demands of college and eventually, the workforce.
Putting this mission into action is difficult when the only computers my students have access to are older then they are. Thank you in advance for your interest in bring 21st century technology to my 21st century learners.
