Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a high poverty school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch! I have high expectations that they will grow and learn beyond what is expected. We are learning skills such as robotics, coding, and typing along with our curriculum. School is a safe and happy place for my students. Each day, they come into the classroom excited about the day and spending time exploring and learning together. For many of my students, being at school is the best part of their day.

My Project

An important 4th grade science standard is understanding how simple circuits work. This is an abstract skill when trying to listen about it in class. However, once students get their hands on batteries, wires, bulbs, and switches, a literal "lightbulb" goes off for them. Being able to actually manipulate the supplies to have a light turn on teaches much more than reading a passage or answering questions. Working with electrical circuits in the classroom is not only a standard that I teach, but it is also a life skill. Maybe my students will learn how to install a simple light switch or change a receptacle in their house!

Many ideas leading to inventions have been born because a child was given the opportunity to explore with their hands to find out how things function and how they are made.

My students love working in small groups and exploring to figure out the answers. Having the hands-on materials to explore circuits would absolutely amazing, plus a great skill to learn.

My students love to read and see pictures of real life science exploration. Having the electricity books will allow my students to read and explore what electricity truly is all about.
