My school is in a low-economic status community on the west-side of Tulsa, OK. Many of my students have difficult lives outside of school, making my classroom one of their most cherished environments. We serve free breakfast and lunch each day, and provide many other opportunities for enrichment and growth beyond the classroom.
As with any classroom, my room is full of diverse learners.
Every fourth grade student I have has a unique personality in the classroom, but they all share the same energy for learning. We work daily on improving our abilities in literal and inferential comprehension, reading fluency and vocabulary through a variety of novel studies and other resources. We also work daily on expanding our understanding of different math concepts and approaches to solving a variety of difficult math problems.
My students continue to show me that even through the struggles and experiences they face outside of school, outside of their control, they are eager to learn and make the world a better place.
My Project
Flexible seating classrooms provide students with a collaborative and comfortable learning environment that traditional seating does not. Students who are comfortable are calm, focused, and productive learners. My goal with this project is to create a welcoming atmosphere that promotes engaging and interactive learning.
Flexible seating allows students to choose the seating option that best meets their specific needs.
Additionally, flexible seating provides opportunities for building a sense of community within the classroom which may otherwise be more difficult in a traditional classroom. This learning atmosphere has been shown to benefit student growth in problem-solving and creativity, and promotes working together in shared spaces.
Through this project, the QBall will allow students who are shy or soft-spoken to gain confidence through reading aloud to their peers. As well, the other requested materials of pillows, lamps, and wobble stools will complete my classroom transformation of a flexible seating setting!
