Foundational Skills That POP!

My students need tricky word cards and comparing text centers to help them understand important 5th grade literary concepts.

My Students

My students often take project extensions to the next level, impressing their parents, classmates and teachers. My goal is to have ALL students do this.

My students attend a school that focuses on project-based learning, 21st century skills and teaching the whole child.

This means that they are experience several enrichments each week. Art, drama, P.E., agricultural science and Spanish. In addition to these, they also work in teams on several collaborative projects. It's important that all students feel confident and have an appropriate skill set to work in teams. For some, this means an emphasis on foundational skills. With absolute mastery as our goal, the resources I'm requesting here will help meet that end.

My Project

My students will use the "tricky word" cards as an introduction into several literary concepts, such as idioms, metaphors, similes and homophones. I appreciate the colorful graphics and age-appropriate examples, which are always relevant and sometimes humorous. Students will use the "What's the Point?" cards to develop a deeper understanding of historical events and short stories, told from opposing points-of-view. This would be helpful on it's own accord, but it also fits nicely into a few of our 5th grade projects, which focus on telling stories from multiple points-of-view.

Worksheets are so 1995.

They have their place, here and there, but for the most part my students benefit from colorful and engaging graphic aides. Often these are digital, but I think it's important to show a variety of graphics and these cards on wonderful. I have no doubt that they will help my students learn.
