Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm the teacher of the Intellectually Disabled Moderate (IDM) program at my middle school. I work at a low-income school, with very little resources, and most of the families I work with are at or below the poverty level. I don't want to let lack of resources stand in the way of my students’ education. I want to be able to provide them with the best learning experience possible and opportunities that will help them progress. Unfortunately, it is difficult to accomplish my goals when resources are limited and the demand is high. I have 6th through 8th graders, and all my students are at different ability levels. I have nonverbal students who need different resources than my students who are struggling readers. I created a classroom environment that runs by centers, and centers lack the resources for the students’ levels. I want to create centers that will enrich all my students’ learning.
Besides teaching intellectual disabled students, I also sponsor a club and support the 8th grade leadership class.
I am very involved with the school, and try to promote a positive school culture. Our students population needs motivation and guidance, which is what I want to accomplish.
My Project
I aim to reinforce foundational language skills by engaging my students with ready-to-use activities every day of the school year. This project contains materials that develop skills in letter and word recognition, letter sound recognition, and recognizing sight words. I teach twenty-two students who have intellectual disabilities. Their ability levels vary, which requires me to teach students various language skills. It is important that I create a classroom environment where all students have accessibility to learning. It can be challenging to do the latter, but with the right supporting materials, it can make it possible.
Help me provide a comprehension-boosting language environment with the Lakeshore learning center materials and kits.
Since I have students who are still learning to recognize some or all the alphabet letters, I asked for materials that are hands-on, since these students need to learn in a more hands-on approach. For my students who recognize the alphabet but are still working on letter sound and blending, I am requesting the word puzzles and the touch and read kits. This project is focused on my lower ability level students. I want to make sure they can accomplish basic skills that will help them tremendously as they grow older and are ready to begin some type of job training.
These skills are what I have noticed need improvement when they work in their student-led business. I plan to integrate language with financial literacy, in hopes that students see the importance of language in their everyday life, such as their employment when they get older.
