Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach special education preschool in a public school district. The children I teach are three to five years of age with bright eyes and warms smiles. My classroom is an inclusion class with both general education and special education students. Fifty percent of the children are mono-lingual Spanish speakers. The students must qualify for preschool and those who do are the students with the highest needs and those who have the highest number of risk factors. Some risk factors include single parent family, 2nd language, homelessness, and low test scores.
The children need a carpet to provide a specific area with clear boundaries to sit on during story and large group activities. I chose this carpet specifically because one of the goals for these young children is to understand and respect personal space. This carpet is ideal for teaching personal space with obvious boundaries of individual colored shapes. It will also provide a natural way to learn the colors and shapes.
The children also need an appropriate place to house reading books. The book shelf is ideal for young learners to pick out books for reading and will teach them respect for books by showing them books can be displayed and organized rather than cluttered in piles.
Having a book shelf to house and display books will not only help my class pick out books easily, learn that books should be respected and organized, but will also help to keep the books in good condition and last for future students use.
Having an area rug for story and large group time will allow my students to sit more attentively and comfortably. It will also provide a fun and natural way for the children to learn important skills like colors, shapes, and personal space.
Your help will ensure that my students learn important pre-reading and math skills that will forever be beneficial in their educational journey. You will also be helping them learn personal space, an important life skill and they will also learn how to respect books with their new book shelf. Most importantly they will learn that they deserve these classroom materials and people care and want to help children learn.
