My Students

Hello, I am a male kindergarten teacher, in an urban school district. I teach in a city in Massachusetts. Our city is home to a wide array of diverse backgrounds, cultures, languages, and socioeconomic statuses. I am so grateful to teach in such a culturally rich district. My students not only enrich my life with their unique experiences and perspectives, but they also enrich each other as well. One of our school rules is acceptance (it's ok to be different). Even in the early years of kindergarten, my students begin to comprehend acceptance. We have a large population of students who come from low-income households, and who struggle to supply needed basic materials. My students do not judge or look down on each other, because they know everyone matters.

My Project

The Library center in my room is lacking. There is a lack of seating for students, and there is a lack of reading materials. My students love to read, but during our center time, my students would rather choose something more "fun" like the math center or the art studio center. I have introduced my own read-along books, and the students love them. Unfortunately, I have a limited supply of these books, and I have run out. I have started making weekly trips to my public library to get the books I need. This project would be so helpful by providing me with even more books for my students to choose from.

Seating has become a challenge.

My students have to drag chairs from other centers and other tables to make sure there is enough seating for everyone. This bench would help my class because it would be a permanent, and comfortable seating option. This project will help my students learn to love reading by giving them a comfortable place to sit and explore books.
