Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in Los Angeles, California just a couple of miles away from USC (Go Trojans!) We are Title I school. Our students receive free meals and almost all of our students are students of color and English Learners.

We are a Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd-grade classroom (4 different grade levels..

in one classroom!) My students are on the Autism Spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects learning, communication, and behavior. Students with autism also face challenges with social skills and self-management. Some students have very limited language and may exhibit challenging behaviors. This is all apparent in our classroom.

My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences, both academic and nonacademic, that they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom. I strongly believe in building independence and ownership at an early age.

My Project

Social and emotional learning is defined as the process which students can acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. This is especially important for my students with special needs. My students have adapted to extreme changes due to our school's closure and distance learning; this has made my students even more resilient. Although they are continually learning how to adapt to changes (which is difficult for many students with Autism) and deal with their emotions, it is not always easy.

My students would love and benefit from having coloring pads, sticker pads, crayons, and star night light projectors to help them improve their social emotional skills.

There is healing power in art and art is therapeutic for many students. I imagine my students turning on their star night light projector, listening to their favorite songs, and engaging in art activities. The star night light projectors will help my students create their own safe and comforting space at home; the art activities will help them cope with any anxiousness, stress, or emotions they are feeling. Imagine listening to your favorite podcast, favorite album, or reading your favorite book to destress and manage your emotions; these items and your donations will allow my students to have the same opportunity.
